Tennessee Is About to Kill a Woman and Call It Closure

Christa Pike is 50. Tennessee still has her on the calendar for Wednesday. If the state goes through with it, she would be the first woman Tennessee has executed in more than 200 years.

Sit with that before you type. Not a metaphor. A date.

The crime was 1995, in Knoxville. Colleen Slemmer was 19. Pike was 18. I am not here to bedazzle a murder into a misunderstanding. Receipts. I don't rewrite history. I archive it. What I will not do is clap while a governor calls the ending closure, like the state just finished a group project and wants a gold star.

On Monday, Gov. Bill Lee denied clemency. Her lawyers asked for commutation. So did the UN. Lee looked at that and kept the date. That is the decision. You can love it. Say it plain. Closure is the coward's caption.

She wrote this. I am not going to sand it down into something cuter: "I am not afraid to die. I'm only nervous about the process."

Nervous about the process. That is the most human sentence in this ugly week, and people will still sprint past it to get to their favorite punishment comment. Be fucking serious. You can want her dead and still hear what she said. If you can't, you aren't tough. You're just loud.

They settled an isolation lawsuit in 2024. Her lawyers took the 14-day solitary to the Supreme Court. Today, Tuesday, September 29, 2026, the Court denied the stay. It denied cert too. Public docket 26A414. I read it. You can read it. https://www.supremecourt.gov/docket/docketfiles/html/public/26A414.html

So no, a judge did not tuck her in and call it mercy. The stay was denied. She is still scheduled for Wednesday. Nobody handed me a fairy tale, and I am not handing you one.

Here is the part that should piss you off, whichever side you picked. We already know the names. We already know the year. We already know she was 18 and Colleen Slemmer was 19 and Knoxville is not a rumor. The new story is the bow. Tennessee wants to kill a woman and staple the word closure on it, like grief has an off switch and the state owns the plug.

It doesn't. Closure is marketing. A dead woman is not a completed sentence. Colleen Slemmer does not come back because a governor held the line on Monday. If you need a body to feel finished, say that. Don't dress it up like a hymn.

If you're on the other side, don't get cute either. Don't turn Pike into a poster and forget the 19-year-old who didn't get to turn 50. I can hold both without lying. That's the job. The pretty version edits one of them out. This isn't pretty.

You want a fight? Good. Tell me what 14 days alone is supposed to prove that the years since 1995 didn't. Tell me why "nervous about the process" is a punchline to you. Tell me why the first woman in more than 200 years is the one you're excited to check off.

I'll read it. I archive it. If you're uncomfortable, read slower.
